The follow-up to his 2015 “Morning/Evening” LP, Kieran Hebden has released his ninth album as Four Tet. “New Energy” is a 14-track record of mellow, low-key electronica and a real pleasure to discover.
Hypnotic chill
Veteran electronic musician Kieran Hebden has proved his talent once again with his new Four Tet album, “New Energy”. Having offered his loyal following of worldwide fans four singles from the album earlier in the year, Hebden’s supporters are now in for a real treat with this new album.
Four Tet’s last release was his epic 2015 LP, “Morning/Evening”, consisting of two 20-minute tracks paying tribute to Hebden’s Indian heritage. Quivering voices from the East layered on a recognisably Four Tet deep thumping beat made for an emotionally charged listening experience.
“New Energy” is a whole new vibe. From start to finish, its sound energises its listener. The scene is set by the ethereal dreamy harp sounds of “Alap” before launching into the exotic downbeat “Two Thousand And Seventeen” featuring a gorgeous-sounding mandolin that comes back numerous times in the record. There’s a moment to pause with “Tremper”‘s hazy blur of birdsong and footsteps on gravel and “Lush” stands out in its driving pace and beautifully muffled and repeated hand-pan riffs. At the end of almost an hour worth of Four Tet genius, we arrive at “Planet” and it’s so worth the wait.
All in all, “New Energy” is a completely hypnotic and captivating listen. Four Tet pulls from such a range of eclectic influences that his music is so uniquely his own that resembles nothing else out there. What’s more, Keiran Hebden also revealed that he gave the first 1,000 vinyl and CD copies of the album to Oxfam. Just another reason to love and discover Four Tet.
